WMF EPNS Cut Crystal Box, Circa 1900`s.
Marked at the back WMF EPNS, (electroplated nickle silver) made by the W.M.F. company WURTTEMBERGISCHE METALLWARENFABRIK.
Established by Daniel Straub in 1853, in Geislingen, WMF was originally known as Straub & Schweizer, but changed its name in 1880 to Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik – the Würtemberg Electro-Plate Company. From just 16 original employees, it had expanded by 1914 to a workforce of over 6000, acquired factories in Germany, Poland and Austria, and established showrooms in London, Paris, Hamburg and Berlin.
The well known 'ostrich' mark originates from the German word for ostrich, 'Der Strauss' after Daniel Straub, one of the founders. The 'G' in the mark stands for the town of Geislingen, on the River Fils and near Ulm in Baden-Württemburg.
The I/0 Stands for normal thickness of Silver Plating.
The N Stands for Nickle Silver.
This beehive mark was introduced in 1909. A version of the beehive with clear top was introduced in 1910 for the French market.
