A nice sized - 17 3/4 by 11 inch - watercolour by Frederick Parr an English West Country artist. (1887 -1970).
Due to his style, and lack of concrete information on his life, auctioneers and dealers were inclined to list him as painting in the 1880s, and there seem to be two schools of thought on the matter.
The Exeter art historian, April Marjoram unearthed information that seemed to indicate that at least some of his work was probably done in the 20s and 30s and probably earlier, and that he was recorded as exhibiting at the Elands Gallery, Exeter in 1924.
But whenever he was painting, he painted beautifully, and certainly in this work he has captured all the charm of the Cornish countryside (Written on the reverse of the backing board was the legend 'on a Cornish farm' with the great cows just having come down to the river for a drink and the farmhouse nestling in the background. I can feel the sun warming their broad backs, hear the buzz of the insects, smell the perfume of the wild flowers.
