This is a fascinating book about that quintessentially 60s fashion icon - Barbara Hulanicki's BIBA.
From a fashion shop in Kensington Church Street to a department store on Kensington , complete with a roof garden which sported flamingos , a lake, fabulous food and oodles to drink, BIBA was THE place to be, to be seen and of course TO SHOP.
Biba sold everything from their own label baked beans to entire rooms. Their black lipstick, of which I was a great admirer, was I imagine the first of its kind. I dressed in Biba and ate Biba and breathed Biba ... what heaven it was to relax on the roof garden in the sun with a drink !! those truly were the days of wine and roses and hedonism.
This book is written by Delisia Howard and illustrated by Chris Price her partner, and by Hulanicki herself.
There are pages where Chris has illustrated the wonderful fashions and then Hulanicki has done sketches on a tracing paper which layers on the top. From inspiration to the final product.
Delisia was there at Biba from the beginning to the end, knew Hulanicki intimately and was also one of her models ... and here she captures the spirit of those wonderful heady days when it seemed than anything was possible.
It is the spirit of Biba, not a dry book 'about Biba' and is simply a WONDER!!
Delisia & Chris set up their own publishing company - Hazard - and this was their very first book. They were friends of mine for many years and I got this book from them. It has never been used and so, is virtually brand new.
It is from the first limited edition and is number 218 of 400.
A rare and wonderful thing!
