The most BEAUTIFUL and detailed painting of a Japanese monkey - colour on laid silk. Not signed but at the very least, clearly a follower Sosen Mori 'The Monkey Man'. I find the detail and skill rivals Sosen's and who knows perhaps it was a study for a larger work. Take a moment to observe the delicacy of the fur, the expression on the monkey's face, the way his feet and hands are detailed and the way he clasps the branches that secure him. Sosen was the founder of the Mori painting school and was active in Osaka at the end of the Edo period. His work was exemplified by fine attention to detail and he strove to capture the natural world in all its beauty.Excellent condition, in original double mount, the top mount being laid silk.
Probably around 1910.
