This exciting and very rare Kramer demi of brooch and earrings looks like a representative piece from a museum of contemporary art. Created in the chunky, abstract style of art moderne, the set features beautiful japanned metal in glossy black with pavé set rhinestones in dazzling colors of hyacinth orange and golden topaz that contrast sharply with the blackened metal. Looking like a stylized shield, the triangular-shaped brooch measures 1 ¾" by 1 ¾" and closes with a rolling barrel pin and safety clasp. The uniquely shaped clip-on dangle earrings measure 1 ¾" long by ¾" wide.
The rhinestones are all present and the colors are true with no deadened or darkened stones. The glossy japanning chosen for this set marks a refreshing departure from the mat finish we typically see in japanned costume jewelry. The finish is in wonderful condition, with only one or two places on the reverse of the pieces evidencing slight loss.
All pieces are hallmarked KRAMER without the copyright sign in a rectangular cartouche. Some sources date this hallmark to pre-1955, however, others have noted that Kramer did produce some post-1955 work that omitted the copyright mark, so the presence of the copyright mark may offer little help when dating Kramer jewelry (Carroll, 2007). Given the use of art moderne style and the resurgence of interest in japanned costume jewelry during the early 1960's, it is likely this very unique and highly collectible Kramer set dates to that time.
Each piece of your beautiful vintage costume jewelry will be sent to you wrapped in archival quality, acid-free tissue paper and placed in a gift box tied with ribbon.
