I just fell in love with this antique brooch, from the mid to late 19th Century.
Although the woman's portrait is very nice it was the fabulous frame that struck my fancy. The frame, which looks to be gold filled, is done in the shape of a horseshoe and has an overall chased design. It is embedded with paste, in shades of red and blue. There is a small triangular smooth piece going over the top of the frame.
The frame surrounds the round portrait which is painted on porcelain. It depicts a female with piled high white hair enhanced by two red flowers on top. The background color is black. Very nicely done.
The closure is an old c-clasp style. In addition to this closure there is a fine chain hanging from the bottom of the horseshoe with a gold pin meant to be pushed through one's clothing as added security. Very charming.
The brooch/pin measures 1 3/8" in length and is 1 1/8" wide. The portrait has a 1/2" diameter. It is in fine antique condition.
