This beautiful object is a christening or presentation cup made of sterling silver and dating from the mid to late 19th Century. It is not hallmarked, but tests positive for 925 sterling silver.
The piece has an inscription which reads, "Augustus Totten Thatcher
- From his Uncle-
My research on the name has led me to a Totten family in Connecticut and Pennsylvania. James Totten was a coal magnate and lived from 1854 to 1892. I believe this comes from that family.
The cup is just gorgeous. It has floral etched designs as well as two scenic panels depicting small houses. The handle is curved and oh so graceful with an applied leaf at the top of the handle.
The cup is 3 3/4" high and has a base diameter of 2 1/4". It weighs 2.925 troy ounces and is in fine antique condition.
