I just love these old antique tintypes of children. This one shows a young boy on his little white hobby horse. He is wearing what looks like an apron and perhaps a dress, as they did put those on boys long ago. I especially love the white, possibly paper, cone style hat.
The image is 1/6 plate size, and is encased in a wood composition/leather case. It measures 3 3/4" by 3 1/4". There is a nice red velvet embossed pad inside the front cover and the image is surrounded by a gold tone metal decorative surround. The exterior of the case is is embossed in a decorative scroll like design. It has a latch closure. These cases and images date from the mid to later part of the 19th Century (1870's to 1880's).
The condition of the case is excellent, with a working latch and intact leather spine which looks to be a replacement. The tintype shows a clear image of the little boy, with the background somewhat fuzzy..
