This is a charming folk art box, known as tramp art. many of these items were done by German immigrants who often used cigar boxes as a base for their work. This one possibly started out life as a cigar box, as it has that size and shape. It dates from the early part of the 20th Century.
It is covered in layers of chip carving. which is done in a three color tone pallet. The shaded colors add to the design.
The top is hinged and opens to reveal a red felt lining. The base is square and lined in the felt underneath.
The piece measures about 9" by 6 1/2" and is about 5 1/2" tall. It is in fine vintage condition.
