This sweet little case is made of papier mache and has hand painted scenes on both the front and back. It was designed to hold old calling cards, or visiting cards. I am familiar with the Victorian cases with the hinged tops, but this one appears to be a later version, that I am guessing dates from the early part of the 20th Century.
The case has a painted blue green background color with a house scene on one side and a sailboat scene on the other. Both set among trees and water. The colors are muted and look to be of Art Nouveau design.
The top slips off to reveal a slotted compartment to place your cards. Unfortunately the modern day business card is just a tad too big, but I trimmed mine down ever so slightly and the cards would then fit. It would be a nice accessory item for your purse or dresser.
The case measures 3 3/4" by 2 1/4". It is in very good vintage condition.
