I have always admired these wonderful tea caddies and am pleased to offer this one to you. It was made in China, circa 1850-1880 and designed for the European market. It is made of lacquered wood and is decorated in gold leaf, showing Asian figures and buildings. It has four carved wood feet in a claw shape.
The box has a lock but no key present. The hinged lid opens to reveal two covered compartments that are made of silver colored metal, probably pewter or lead. These can lift out and the covers can lift off. All the metalwork is heavily embossed with with floral designs.
The box measures 8 1/2" long and is 6" wide. It stands 5 1/2" tall. It is in very good antique condition with no wear showing to the gold paint. There is an area at the right hand back cover that shows some crackling, but otherwise good hinges and excellent interior. Surely a wonderful addition to your chinoisserie or tea caddy collection.
