Seeing this object just took my breadth away. It is a fan and fan box dating from the mid to late 19th Century. It is obviously Chinese.
The box is made of papier mache and is decorated all over with gold designs of trees and branches, the top part showing a scene with four people. It had a key at one time, but that is long gone. It opens to reveal the most exquisite padded silk lining on the inner cover. The lining is colored in a pale to mid shade of blue, and has embroidered scenes of people, fish and flowers. There are vibrant colors of pinks and greens, etc.
The interior of the box is lined in the same blue padded silk and has a slot for the fan handle to fit into. Just marvelous.
The fan is made of white feathers, perhaps ostrich. and has wonderful carved slats/sides showing birds and people. All the slats are carved with a similar design. There is a tassel at the end in red and green . The craftsmanship is amazing.
The box measures 13 3/4" long and is 3 1/2" wide. The fan has a length of 10 3/4". The fan is in fine antique condition. The box interior is almost mint, with no fading. The only condition issue of note is some minor wear or missing lacquer on the box. Overall in remarkable condition for a piece of this age.
This is a spectacular Chinese antique, don't miss out.
