I am presenting a wonderful set consisting of a belt buckle and pair of earrings, unsigned but obviously made by the Mexican firm of Casa Maya, as the set was purchased at an estate auction together with the other Casa Maya pieces being listed today, and a traditional design put out by that company and dating from the 1950's.

Many of these modernistic whimsical style motifs were created by a famous American designer who studied in Paris, lived in Taxco Mexico for several years in the 1940's, and who’s original jewelry pieces, created at that time, are almost impossible to find today. Casa Maya , a prestigious Mexican jewelry firm, copied many of these designs during the 1950's to cater to the burgeoning Mexican tourist market, and these ‘copied’ pieces have become fairly rare in their own right, and are highly sought after today.

The buckle and earrings are known as the Sputnick or naval mine design, and certainly have a modernistic flair. They are made of mixed metal, I believe brass and copper.. The belt buckle consist of three spheres with protruding spikes and the two outer ones are encircled by large open ropes. The coloration ranges from an almost silver color to that of a rose gold color. The length of the buckle is 7 1/2" and it is 2" wide at its widest point.

The earrings are gold color spheres with protruding spikes and have screw backs which pry open and are easy to wear. They seem to be a combination of a clip and screw back, and may have been a later addition.

This is truly a fine set for a lover of the "modernist" look in jewelry. The pieces have a combined weight of 121 grams. The buckle is in good vintage condition, the earrings show show wear to the metal. Note all of the 'spikes' on the earrings are present. Some of the listing pictures show round shadows, which are only reflections of our ceiling fixture. If seeking to purchase only the belt from this set (not the earrings) you may take $35.00 off the listed price.
