This is a rare object indeed. It is a hand carved Black Forest tea caddy made in the shape of an owl. It dates from the end of the 19th to the beginning of the 20th Century. Black Forest items were carved in the forests of Germany and Switzerland. Bears and owls were a popular motif.
The owl stands about 7 3/4" tall and is 4" wide and deep. He has lovely black glass eyes. His hinged lid opens to reveal a compartment for tea, which is tin lined. I have never seen one like this before. He has great carving, depicting all his fine feathers. A must for any Black Forest or tea caddy collector. He is in very fine antique condition.
