I just love the Victorian custom of presenting one's card when visiting. Of course they could not call or email ahead. This is one of the pretty cases madame might have had to hold her paper cards. The card case dates from the 1860's to 1880's.
The case is made of papier mache and hand painted with floral bouquets on both sides of the case - a slightly different bouquet on each side. It has a gold color background and gilt scroll designs on both top and bottom. It has a hinged lid with a button latch and is lined in red velvet.
The case measures 4" tall by 2 3/4" wide and will hold a modern business card. It is in good antique condition with a slight indentation on the side of the lid and some slight craquelure to the papier mache. The painting on both sides is vibrant and beautiful. What a way to make an impression with your friends and business associates when you take this out of your purse - or just display the case on your vanity or tabletop.
