This wonderful pair of opera glasses are made of mother of pearl and brass and date from the late 19th Century. This was almost a required item for anyone attending the opera or theater in those days. It is a puzzlement to me that the eye pieces on the glasses are hallmarked LE MAIRE PARIS on one side and STOWELL BOSTON on the other. It comes with its original case that is hallmarked A. STOWELL & CO. BOSTON. I have concluded that the Boston company most likely imported the glasses, as all of these of opera glasses were manufactured in Paris.
The mother of pearl has a wonderful iridescence. The glasses work quite well, with the knob being a bit stiff to turn. They measure 4" across and 2" high. The case is made of black leather and has a red silk lining. It still snaps closed, but has lost its handle which I found detached inside the case. The small brass push in clasp is decorated with an embossed bug, how charming. There is also a split at the front of the case, but it is rare to find the original case, which is still usable.
This would make a great gift to a theater goer, or take it yourself and receive compliments or stares.
