I was thrilled to acquire this fantastic Victorian necessaire, a boxed set of accessories for madame. Stylistically they appear to be of approximately 1890's vintage. The brown leather box contains two hat pins, one large belt buckle and six collar buttons with holders.
The hat pins have a center of white mother of pearl surrounded by an iridescent ring of what looks like abalone or brown mother of pearl. The hat pins are of two different lengths, perhaps one cut down for smaller hats. One has a length of 10 1/2" and the other a length of 5 1/2". The backs of the pins, (not the stems) are testing electronically at low karat gold - approximately 10 karat.
The belt buckle measures 3 1/2" by 2 3/4". It has a gold color metal back and the front has pretty brown guilloche enamel work with white trim.
The color buttons are a set of six There fronts are the same as the hat pins. They have a diameter of 3/8". There are six gold rings, which I believe attach the buttons to ones blouse or collar. The metal rings used to attach the buttons are also testing at low karat gold,
- approximately 10 karat.
There are no hallmarks on any of the pieces.
All are contained in a brown leather satin lined fitted box which has a hinged lid. It is difficult to close but if pressed hard, can be latched. The box measures 11 1/2" by 4" when closed.
All the contents are in fine antique condition, The smaller hat pin shows tarnish at the tip. The box has decent satin and velvet lining, but the outside leather has seen better days.
