This wonderful brooch or pin dates to the mid 19th Century, Victorian era. Being black it is known as mourning jewelry and became popular at the time of Prince Albert's death. The seed pearls and tear shaped dangles are symbols of mourning. Today this style of Victorian jewelry is highly collectible and worn just for its beauty and craftsmanship.
The brooch is made of 10 karat yellow gold, not hallmarked but carefully acid tested. The front is covered in a highly polished onyx stone and the center has an attached gold leaf design centered with a single seed pearl. The three tear shaped onyx pendants hang gracefully down the bottom.
The brooch has a c-clasp closure with an elongated pin, showing it to be an earlier piece. It measures a total of 2" long and is 1 1/4" wide. It weighs 8.7 grams and is in fine antique condition. You could possibly thread a chain through the top and wear it as a pendant if desired.
