A fabulous Napoleon III Grand Tour item, possibly from the famous shops of the Palais Royale. French in origin, this small casket or trinket box measures 5" by 3" and is 3 3/4" high.
The piece is made of gilt metal, either brass or bronze and has a large egg shaped piece of mother of pearl on top. The mother of pearl measures about 2 1/2" by 1 3/4". All the metal work has a lovely textured and etched design of swirls and leaves..
There are four ball feet that are attached to the sides, front and back, with fancy metal work.
The lid is hinged and has a small clasp to open it, some of which is missing. It still works and does not distract from the design. The bottom is lined in red velvet, still in fine condition. The piece is in good antique condition for its age (circa 1860) and would be wonderful for your jewels or trinkets.
