This is a very beautiful photo case dating to the middle of the 19th Century. It is made of papier mache and contains a tintype of a gentleman.
The case is 1/9th plate size, measuring 3 1/8" by 2 3/4". The cover has a hand painted design of flowers, some red and some inlaid with mother of pearl, a popular motif in this time period. It is American made. The binding makes it appear like a little book and the back cover has a gold stenciled border design.
The brass latch opens to reveal a nice embossed red velvet inner cover with a bird and leaf design, slightly faded. The tintype shows a bearded bust of a gentleman.
The piece is in good antique condition, with only the referenced minimal fading to the velvet, and slight loss to the gold design on the back cover. This would make a nice prop for your French Fashion Doll, or a nice addition to your antique photography collection.
