This is a wonderful hand carved sculpture dating from the late 19th Century. It is know as Black Forest and is a form of folk art that was made in Germany and Switzerland during the 19th and early 20th Centuries.
This grouping shows three animals, the largest being a stag with his proud horns, a smaller stag by his side, and sitting on a stone atop the grass is a baby fawn.
It is very beautifully carved and has a height of 7 1/2" with the base measuring 4" by 2 1/4". It appears that both the large stag and the middle size one have one curved horn and one that is not curved. I'm not sure whether this represents minimal damage or perhaps the intent of the carver. In any event this is minimal in nature and just noted for accuracy. Apart from this, the carving is in fine antique condition. The animals have dark glass eyes. The carving is marked on the base with underside with some initials, which I presume are those of the artist.
