This fabulous box is French in origin and dates to the late 19th Century. It is made of gilded bronze and has beautiful blue enamel work. I believe the box was meant as a humidor, to hold small cigars or cigarettes, as it is lined in wood. It would also make a lovely trinket or dresser box.
The piece measures 4 5/8" by 3 1/2" and stands 1 1/2" tall. The cover has a large central oval with a raised village scene showing people and houses. There is gorgeous cobalt blue enamel work decorating the top. The sides all have a heavily embossed design with festoons.
There is a small curved handle in the center and a hinged lid. Under the handle it reads FRANCE. The interior has a medium shade of brown wood lining the front cover and the entire bottom. It does not retain any tobacco smell and may never have been used. The piece looks pristine.
It is just a wonderful box to add to your collection. Don't miss out.
