Presenting a beautiful locket from the Victorian era; circa 1870. The locket is made of gutta percha, a material first introduced in the mid 19th Century and made from tree resin. It was often used in jewelry and was usually black or brown in color and popular as mourning jewelry.
This oval shaped locket has a deep brown color. It has a gorgeous molded cameo of a woman on the cover. She is sporting a very elaborate hair style. The locket has a small ring style metal bale on top. It opens to reveal two glass enclosed oval compartments, to place photos - or as was often done in Victorian times, remnants of hair from your loved one.
The piece measures 1 3/4" by 1 1/2" when closed. It is in fine antique condition.
