This wonderful box dates to the 1880's and was made in England. I believe this is called Tunbridge Ware.
The box is made of wood, perhaps poplar, and has fabulous bands of inlay done in satin and fruitwood.
Its hinged top opens to reveal a tufted claret silk lining on the inner top cover. It certainly once had a lift out tray, but that unfortunately is long gone. Perhaps you have one, or could use it for jewelry. It was meant to lock, but the key is missing.
It is large, measuring 10" by 6 3/4", with a height of 5 1/2". There is some scratching to the top lid. Please see pictures. Still a lovely place to store your jewels of sewing items. I have priced it accordingly.
