This wonderful object is a page turner or letter opener, dating from the late 19th Century. It bears no hallmarks and I believe it to be silver-plate. It was made during a period when Asian design was highly popular, and the design shows those influences.
The piece has a length of 8 3/4" and a width of 2" at the top. The blade has an etched design of bamboo with a little dragonfly at the bottom. There is a wonderful raised Japanese woman complete with a fan and umbrella. She is wearing a kimono. The top has a large raised thistle.
This period, Aesthetic, coincides with the Art Nouveau era, and has much in common with those designs.
The piece is in fine antique condition and would be a wonderful desktop accessory in your home or make a fabulous gift.
