This is one of the most beautiful compacts I have ever come across. It is hallmarked Made In Italy, 800, and dates to the 1950's.
The piece has stunning deep blue cobalt enamel work on the cover and a central carved chariot scene. (It does not contain any restricted material).
The scene shows a putti driving two horses on his chariot. It is masterfully done. The scene is outlined in chased silver and the front corners have chased silver work.
The compact opens to reveal a gilt lining and a mirror. and the back has a pretty etched silver floral design.
Unfortunately the compact is not perfect, and I have marked it accordingly. There is some damage to the enamel along the sides, which could be repaired, and some crackling on the tin foil behind the carving. The mirror has a few spots.
The piece has a gross weight of 102 grams, or 3.28 troy ounces.
Even with its flaws I just couldn't resist this gorgeous example of mid-century Italian artistry; could you?
