This spectacular statement necklace is marked "Made In France" and I believe dates to the very beginning of the 20th Century. When I first saw the piece, I thought it was an earlier Napoleon III era necklace, especially with the use of the mother of pearl ovals which are so prevalent in objects from this time period. The "Made In France" tells me it is a little bit newer than mid 19th Century.
The necklace is made up of 19 mother of pearl oval disks surrounded by a gold tone border. The disks range in size from about 1" to 1 1/4" in length. There are gold tone leaves attached to the discs closer to the center, and 8 of the discs hang down as pendants.
There is a central hanging gold colored pendent, which is 1 1/2" long suspended from the middle of the necklace.
The necklace is 17" long, but can be made shorter with its hook and chain closure.
It is in good vintage condition, with some darkening of the metal surrounding the shells. The necklace weighs 36.4 grams. Don't miss out on this unique, one of a kind French beauty.
