This is a piece of moriage in a shape I do not often see. It is a covered tureen, with a 4 3/4" diameter. Most of the moriage pieces I come across are vases. This piece was made in Japan during the Meiji era and dates to the late 19th or early 20th Century.
The piece has a brown background color with four cartouches displaying floral bouquets, all hand painted. The moriage, or slip-work, has a myriad of colors, some of which are blue, green, cobalt and brown. There are handles on either side of the base covered in turquoise and pink moriage. The cover has a top handle for ease in lifting.
The piece has a height of about 5", including the cover handle. The condition is very good, with no hairlines or cracks and only some minimal roughness around the border of the cover. All the moriage seems intact.
