This is a very pretty calling card, or visiting card case from the late 19th Century. It is made of mother of pearl and has a carved portrait.
The front cover shows a profile of a Victorian lady dressed in her finery, which includes a feathered hat and a necklace. The back cover has a single etched rose.
The case measures 2" by 2 5/8" and is just slightly too small for a present day business card, but if you trim the card ever so slightly you could still use it for your cards. It would also look elegant on an easel stand on a shelf, as I display my personal collection.
The piece is in very good antique condition with a fully working snap closure. The inside red felt lining is somewhat faded.
