This is a most unusual piece of vintage jewelry. It is Middle Eastern in origin and is made of at least 18 karat yellow gold. Our acid and electronic tester are showing it at above 18 Karat - likely approximately 20k.
The piece is a very large pin or brooch that holds a surprise, a small sword or knife. Perhaps it is symbolic of a fraternal order?
The sheath of the knife is of the high karat gold and has a rich gold patina. It is highly embossed in a floral design, reminding me of Arabian design.l Hanging down from the sheath are two coins, each with I believe Greek letters.
The handle of the knife, or mini sword is made of a fine ebonized wood, with a gold band going through it. There is even a small ruby at the top. the blade is a shiny steel color and quite sharp. Was this made for a woman to protect herself? Could really come in handy nowadays.
The sheath, which is solid gold has a weight of 5.3 grams. The brooch closes with a c-clasp. The overall length is 5 1/16". It is in lovely vintage condition.
