This is a wonderful hand carved piece from the Black Forest of Germany or Switzerland. It dates to the late 18th to early 19th Century.
It is a clever design, used to hold one's pocket watch when not in use. It folds back to allow it to stand up and display the watch on your night stand, acting as a clock.
The wood is a medium brown tone and the carving is a striped design showing two different patterns. The inside compartment, which hold the pocket watch is lined in brown velvet.
When closed the piece measures 3 3/4" in length and is about 2" wide. The compartment used to hold the watch has an approximate 1 1/2" diameter. It is in excellent vintage condition.
Note the pocket watch displayed in one of the pictures is just for illustration purposes (to show how a watch displays), and is not included in the listing.
