Spectacular Rhinestone Snake Watch by Caravelle, a division of the Bulova Watch Company dates between 1962 to 1969. It is from my personal collection. Like many pieces in my collection, I have never worn it, but I do love my snake jewelry and this amazing covered watch is simply over-the-top.
This magnificent rhinestone double snake watch cleverly features two snake heads, one of which has a cover to press down with a fingertip to open and reveal a very high quality, mechanical time piece. I have no idea how many of these watches were made, but we have only recently seen one other similar piece, signed Ciner. This one has no signature other than the one on the watch face. Clearly, Caravelle private labeled a version of this watch for Ciner. Whether this style is unsigned Ciner is anybody's guess.
In 1962, Bulova opened the Caravelle division for jeweled watches. In 1969, that division introduced quartz watches. There is little question that this watch must be dated between 1962 and 1969 because it has a mechanical movement.
The watch is made like fine jewelry, with a very well-made, flexible, incorporated band. The top of each snake's head has a sapphire colored half moon shaped stone set on decorative raised platforms on the heads accented with pink and sapphire blue rhinestones with raised gold tone, and the rest has clear rhinestones in snakeskin textured metal. The eyes are red rhinestones. The bodies of the snakes form a connecting band of pink, sapphire blue color and clear rhinestones se slightly below the tips of the textured gold tone metal. We note the fine and thoughtful design in setting most of the stones below surface, which protects the rhinestones from loss or damage. This is quality jewelry, meant to last.
The watch measures a wearable length of approximately 7-1/4" and is approximately 1-1/2" wide. There is a beautifully-working box clasp. It has appears to have once had a spring ring and chain safety clasp. One side of the loop is missing. There is a small speck of solder where it probably was. Otherwise. the watch is in Excellent Condition and was tested for several hours. It kept perfect time for at least five hours or more, although this is not in any way guaranteed.
Here is a wonderful opportunity to own a stunning and very rare rhinestone snake watch from the 1960s by Caravelle. Impressive and unique for the jewelry collector, watch collector or Cleopatra!
