This beautiful eggshell porcelain cup with saucer is decorated with gold and polychrome enamel in the Rose Medallion style that shows pink roses and flowers on one side, people on the other side, and a central medallion with a pink rose. The stylized symbols on the saucer are the Chinese character for longevity.
The rims of the cup and saucer are painted with gold enamel, as are the handle, the border of the central medallion, and the longevity characters. Both the cup and saucer have inscriptions on the bottom – the cup has "decorated in Hong Kong" and the saucer "hand-painted in Hong Kong for decoration purposes only."
The cup and saucer were likely manufactured in the kilns of Jingdezhen and shipped to Hong Kong for decoration. Porcelain decoration was a thriving business in Hong Kong from its founding in the 19th century until the 1970s and reached its peak in the 1960s. This vase probably dates from the 1950s or 1960s.
The cup is 3.75" in diameter and 2.0" high. The saucer is 5.5" in diameter and 0.875" high.
