La France Roses Print by Teana Mc Lennan Hinman.
This antique cabbage roses print is by the Victorian illustrator Teana Mc Lennan (Hinman) see biography below). It is entitled La France Roses, and the artwork is indeed superb. We have only had this print a few times, perhaps it was only made in the proof stages and very few ever made it to full production. It was made in 1897 by the Montague Marks Company, at 23 Union Square, New York. It is a chromolithograph and was issued as an Art Supplement to the Art Amateur Magazine in June of 1897. It also carries an entry of Facsimile Color Study No. 316. The color hues are as vivid as the day it was printed, unfaded, and the color layers align in perfect register. Almost all of Montague Marks' prints were used exclusively in his own magazine, The Art Amateur, and nowhere else.
This print is housed in a composite gold frame that showcases the roses to perfection. Overall size is 19.75 x 23.75 inches, ready to hang. Both print and frame are in VG++ condition with no unsightly blemishes. The La France rose was the first hybridized rose, and is known for its reflexed petals that have a lighter reverse. It also has a grand fragrance. The mat is less blue/purple than shown, but rather a greyed down mauve hue that compliments the roses very well.
