This sweet little cook book is from the 1880's period, and is entitled Hints to Young Housekeepers, by Mrs. Black. It is a fine compilation of tried and true recipes that are sure to please, some still good today!
The List of Recipes includes:
Beverages: coffee, lemon syrup, milk whey, mulled milk, raspberry vinegar, and sherbet.
Cakes and Baking: baking powder, brown bread, currant cake, holiday cake, Jane's Scones, London buns, oak cakes, Pitcaithly Bannock, plain cake, potato scones, rice cake, simple cake, Scotch currant bun, Scotch shortbread, sponge cake, and Yankee cake.
Fish: cod curried, fish and custard, fish pie, Finnan haddocks, herrings to fry to pot to stew, Kedgeree, Mackerel baked.
Meats: Australian mutton pudding and batter pudding, beef skirt stewed, beef roast, curry, duck stuffed and roasted, Dutch stew, fowl stuff roasted or stewed, good stew, kidney stewed, lamb's head and pluck, liver and bacon stewed and heart baked and stewed, meat pudding, pig's head salted and boiled and fry, pork pickled, pot pie, rabbit curried and tinned, steak stewed and stuffed, veal rolled.

The front and back endpapers have illustrative advertising that indicates this is an London published cook book. The hardbound red cloth-covered boards are in VG condition, as are the cover board corners. The pages have a nice patina and are also very clean; in fact, it doesn't appear this book was used, as the pages have no fingerprints. About 80 pages of delightful recipes, and surely an insight into Victorian cooking. This would be a fine gift for the cook or chef! Overall size is aprox 4.5 x 6.5 inches.
