This wonderful and quirky 17 piece set of quack medicine items is just grand! It's a lifetime collection, and features some quite incredible potions, pills, tinctures, etc. All them are antique and some quite infamous, such as the Bayer (aspirin) Heroin Hydrochloride! And to think this is what folks had in their medicine closets for home care, oh my!
They are as follows:
An immense bottle of "Peters' Specific, The Great Blood Purifier and System Regulator. Recommended for scrofula and all kinds of skin diseases, alterative tonic invigorator and blood purifier. In fact a thorough system regulator. Dose: two teaspoonfuls in a quarter glass water before meals. This medicine is made of pure drugs and contains no Mercury or poison. A reliable spring medicine. Produced by W. H. Peters, Pharmacist, Corner of Main and Broadway, Madison, Indiana." The bottle measures 9.5 inches tall and 4 inches wide, bottom pontil mark with a diamond inside a ring. It has the characteristic imperfect glass with bubble imperfections.
A brown tinted bottle of Clayton and Russell's Celebrated Stomach Bitters, and the contents are still inside with the original cork stopped. The label has a man wrestling a three-headed dog, and below it states that the contents are 37% alcohol---no wonder you felt better after taking this potion! The label reads: "The bitter of Clayton & Russell will be found a highly ardmatic liquid and entirely free from any injurious substances. The herbs roots and barks used as possessed of active medicinal properties and are well known standard remedies in the medical practice of the day. This preparation will be of great benefit in malarial districts as a reliable invigorant and tonic. Guaranteed by Adams & Co. Mfg. Co. under the Food & Drugs Act June 30th 1906. Serial Number 2736." The bottle measures 9 inches tall x 3 inches square, with A & Co. embossed into the bottom area.
The next is a blue tinted corked bottle of "Influenza Cold Mixture. Dose: Adults--one tablespoonful to be taken every 3 to 4 hours, Children--10 to 16 years, a dessert spoonful, Children--5 to10 years, a teaspoonful in a little water. The back has embossed table spoon height markings. The bottle stands 7.5 inches tall x 3 inches wide.
A reddish brown covered box, with apparatus inside "The Universal India Rubber Breast Reliever, Pear shaped ball fitted with glass mount and milk receiver, Ayrton Saunders & Co., Liverpool, England." YES, the breast reliever equipment is still inside, looks like it was never used, all intact, and rubber in fine condition! 6.5 inches tall x 3.5 inches wide, and the pump is 6" long....fantastic!
A RARE, glass stoppered bottle of "The Bayer Co., Heroin Hydrochloride compressed tablets, containing 24th grain each of product. Directions: Two to three, to be taken only by order of a physician (caution)." Bottle stopper fits snugly. Yes, this is the Bayer Aspirin company we know today! Laudanum derivatives could have come from these pills. It measures 5 inches tall x 1.75 inches wide.
Another glass stoppered bottle for "Dilute Hydrochloric Acid, Average Dose: 30 minnums (approximately ½ teaspoonful in ½ glass water, should be taken through glass tube. Poison—-Antidote External: flood with water than cover with moist baking soda. Internal: Do not use emetics or baking soda. Give water with milk of magnesia or aluminum hydroxide gel. If these are not immediately available, give milk or white of eggs beaten with water. Call a physician." Bottle stopper fits snugly, 4 inches tall x 1.5 inches round.
Fantastic glass corked bottle with the cork covering and string tie, AND contents inside, "White Clover Cream, for chapped hands, face and lips, and sunburn, chafing, burns, scalds, etc. Prepared by L. A. Gould, Portland, Me., U.S.A." Extremely scarce, 5 inches high x 2.25 inches wide.
A pristine, tan-colored cardboard box container for "Andrews' Syrup of Figs", A pleasant aromatic combination of the nutritious laxative juice of the California fig with tropical plants and barks of great medicinal value for the cure of occasional and habitual constipation, and the many ills arising from a weak or inactive condition of the stomach, bowels, kidneys, and liver. It is pleasant to the taste, mild in action, and is perfectly safe in all cases. Directions inside, Andrews Drug and Chemical Company, Brillion, Wis. And Attleboro, Mass". A tan and brown covered box for "Baume Bengue, the original French product, Menthol + Salicylate of Methyl + Lanolin, for the relief of pain in rheumatism, colds, neuralgia. Prepared by Dr. Bengue, at Union City, N.J., Pharmacist de 1st Classe, 16 Rue Ballu, Paris." 4.5 inches length, x 1.75 inches wide, x 1 inch tall.
A red box with the glass pill bottle, all its pink pills corked inside, AND instruction flyer, for "Crane's Anti-Headache and Pain Pills, contains 140 gr. Acetanilid per ounce. These pills do not contain any opium, morphine, cocaine, or any other habit-forming drugs. Non-laxative, 25 doses, 25 cents, Crane Medicine Co., Chicago, IL." 3 inches tall x 1 inch square. Amazing...!
A pink-colored box with the glass pill bottle, and all its pinkish red pills corked inside for "Triner's Red Pills, contains 50 pills, recommended for constipation, flatulence, colic, Jaundice, coughs and coldcolds, Female troubles, Rheumatism. Dose: One or two pills at bedtime, Distributed by Jos. Triner Company, Ashland Ave., Chicago, IL. 2.75 inches high x .75 inches square.
A white box with TWO corked glass bottles and their contents inside, containing "Dr. Woofter's Corn and Bunion Remedy, alcohol 19 percent, Prepared by Dr. C. Woofter, Chiropodist, 5007 Delmar Blvd., St. Louis, MO, Price 25 cents." Directions for use on the sides and back. Size is 3 inches high x 1.5 inches wide.
An orange-colored box, with corked glass bottle, and pill contents inside for "Crane's Kidney Pills, for backache, rheumatism, weak kidneys, congestion of the kidneys, inflammation of the bladder, gravel and urinary irregularities". More text on sides, measures 3 inches high x 1.5 inches square. A bar of "Dr. P. J. Eichhoff's Superfatted Medicinal Soap, manufactured by Ferd Mulhens Inc. New York, NY." Sealed bar of soap, never opened, 3 inches long.
A round tin container of "Healing Salve, for cuts, burns, bruises, ulcers, self-rheum, tetter, eczema, fever sores, chilblains, boils, felons, pimples, chapped and cracked hands, etc. Directions: Apply freely to parts affected, rubbing in well. J. E. C. F. Harper, Druggist, Madison Indiana." 3 inches wide x 1.5 inches tall.
A lovely round beige box of "Lablache Face Powder, a harmless toilet powder for refreshing and beautifying the complexion, used and endorsed by the most refined ladies in private and public life. Ben Levy Co., Sole Proprietor, Guaranteed under the Food & Drugs Act, June 30th, 1906, No. 22." 3 inches wide x .75 inches tall, with a cupid on the box lid.
A corked glass bottle with contents still inside for "Dr. William Hall's Balsam, alcohol 15 percent, When there is much cough or the phlegm is hard to raise the above quantity (doses) to be taken every hour till it excites the secretions sufficient to raise the matter from the lungs. When the patient begins to expectorate freely a dose of 4 or 5 times a day will be sufficient. Keep the bowels open with a mild cathartic. Hall & Ruckel, agents, Guaranteed under Food & Drug Act, June 30th 1906. Glass bottle is embossed with the manufacturer's name, 5.5 inches tall x 2 inches wide.
Again, this came from a private collection, was a lifetime of collecting, and is indeed amazing. What a splendid gift for the doctor, homeopathic endeavors, nurse, psychologist! Many of the items date 1870-1890's. Displayed it will be quite the conversation piece with plenty of "oh my" comments. More photos are available upon request.
