Antique Victorian Roses Painting Fancy Gilt Frame.
This absolutely spectacular Victorian roses painting is just incredibly gorgeous. It is superbly painted original watercolor, by the artist E. Allen. It is a grand vertical display of old cabbage roses, and the color hues are magnificent. In Victorian times, the red or scarlet rose symbolized the virtue of "True Love". The roses are superbly detailed with fine execution.
There are many E. Allen's in Davenport's Art Reference, so this could be a listed artist. It measures aprox 18 x 27.5 inches in the old gesso, pierced cutwork gilded frame. The backing is still the old shingle. The watercolor is in very good condition and so is the frame with some pieces missing at the corner areas, typical of the old pierced gilt frames, not detracting, and easily repairable. This is one of the largest paintings we've had in a long time, and will be a focal point in any rose grouping.
