This wonderful 1894 antique roses print is by the Victorian artist, Virginia Janus. It is a chromolithograph entitled Real Beauties, and is a splendid study of soft-headed cabbage roses in a vase. The colors are wonderful, and the artwork is indeed superb. Not much is known about Janus' life; however, she was active and painting at the same time as other prominent Victorian illustrators.
The print was made by the Knapp Lithographic Company, and was an Art Supplement to the New York Recorder on April 12th, 1894. This print is in near fine condition without any blemishes. It is housed in a gilt-over-wood frame, with burnished brass corner brackets that mimic the soft rounded forms of the rose blooms. Overall size is aprox 14.25 x 22.25 inches. The frame is also in VG++ condition, ready to hang.
