There is just something so special about this post Civil War 1888 book, and oh so entertaining! It's entitled "My Summer In A Garden", authored by Charles Dudley Warner. The story is about a man who plants his summer garden, and all the crazy things that cross his path when working his garden! Comical prose about garden tasks abounds in this book.

The preliminary text opens with some precious thoughts: "The love of dirt is among the earliest of passions, as it is the latest. Mud-pies gratify one of our first and best instincts. So long as we are dirty, we are pure..."

The author writes about what he knows about gardening, "holding that no man has any right to keep valuable knowledge to himself, and hoping that those who come after me, will find profit in the perusal of my experience..."

In the second week: "Next to deciding when to start your garden, the most important matter is, what to put in it...unless your garden is a boundless prairie (and mine seems to me to be that when I hoe it on hot days)..." The whole book has this jovial language throughout it, making it light and laughable reading.

By the seventh week he writes: "Garden is an awful responsibility. You never know what you may be aiding to grow in it...talk about the Darwinian theory of development, and the principle of natural selection! I should like to see a garden run in accordance with it."

By the tenth week, he's got the scarecrow up, cows are running amuck in the garden, and the cat is on the loose. But even so..."I think I have discovered the way to keep peas from the birds." Even though the birds outwit him, there are plenty enough so that he has some harvest!

He tries to take a little time off from gardening, and returns to find that "the strawberry plants, for one thing, had taken advantage of my absence. Every one of them has sent out as many scarlet runners as an Indian tribe has." The way he couches his sentences can't help but make you smile. Eventually, at the end of the season, after he's harvested, rid the garden of weeds, and enjoys the bounty he has created, he finds peace on "the field of battle".

Quite a fun book I must admit, and just a joy for the lover of gardening or horticulture to read. About 186 pages. This hardbound very fine book has fancy green cloth covered boards with a man sitting on a plow in gilt relief. The title is also in gilt with some black border imprinting, and the same is true on the spine. This little book's beveled boards have just a bit of wear at the bottom of the spine, cover boards, and corners. The inside pages are gilt tipped, and the inside pages are in near fine condition, with the previous owner's name on the front flyleaf in pencil. Text block is firm. Overall size is 5 x 6.75 inches, in good condition. We do welcome all layaways.
