Negro Boy American Beauty Antique Print.
This wonderful c1895 antique print is entitled American Beauty, and is a play on words, meaning it applies to either the rose or the sweet little boy. This print is very scarce and highly sought after. It was made in 1895 by the Winters Company of Chicago, and was a supplement to the Boston Herald on Nov. 30, 1895. The little negro boy is tenderly smelling an American Beauty Rose. His face is just precious, superbly executed. It is indeed a fabulous historical piece of black memorabilia, a tender scene portrayal that tugs at the heart.
This print is a chromolithograph and the color layers align in perfect register. It is in the original period frame and has the old hand rolled glass. The frame is in VG condition with a little bit of flaking, as is customary for a print of its age. It is a wood frame with burnished gold paint and has a sort of raised leaf motif.. The print is also in VG condition, with minimal wear, and a few light ripples in the print. One is by the head. another by his lower right arm. Both are hardly seen hanging, but more pronounced in the photos because the photos were taken at an angle when the print was flat, not hanging. There is also what looks like a very light roundish mark above the elbow, not sure what it is, but probably not a watermark. The top corners have just a hint of wear, again not real visible when hanging. All are not detracting in the least, but mentioned for accuracy. This print is so so hard to find, it is a treasure indeed when it surfaces.
The print is laid behind a soft textured faux suede mat that compliments the color hues perfectly. Overall size is 10.75 x 14.75 inches, ready to hang. The backing board has some old tape residue around the edges.
