This medical guide has a copyright of 1918 by the WORLD'S DISPENSARY MEDICAL ASSOCIATION, with preface to the present edition written October 1, 1926. Author Dr. R. V. Pierce founded the renown Surgical Institute in Buffalo, New York, (at the time of publication, touted as being one of the healthiest cities in the United States) and has included his many endorsed treatments and cures in this wonderful medical reference book of 1,007 pages. There is no 'Table of Contents', however there is an appendix as well as a 'Vocabulary' (defined terms). It is impossible to include every interesting and amusing tidbit, however I'll address a few of my favorites.
Page 919 covers 'Dr. Pierce's Family Medicines', including chill tonic pills (remedy for malaria), a herbal tonic for weak women (!), in cases of barrenness, hysteria, nervousness or morning sickness. 'Pleasant pellets' give satisfaction in sick headedness, indigestion, and other derangements of the stomach. The book contains many testimonials from happy patients, with their names, but leaving their address out, for privacy. (!) Highly personal issues are addressed, with ludicrous cures. Sorry, you'll have to read the book to find that section.
The condition of the book is fragile yet intact. The outer cover along the top has several small tears along with the copyright page partially pulled away from the spine, although the spine is intact. The pages are yellowed and there's a few minor issues, however given the fact that it is nearly 100 years old, in pretty nice, readable condition.
This is the ultimate coffee table book for the start of an interesting conversation!
