This little diary of sorts is one inspirational, heart warming example of record keeping nearly 150 years ago!
Hardbound with pansies and gold leaf lettering, this little book has one page for each day of the year. The top of the page has the date, followed by a passage from the bible, i.e., 'Being knit together in love, and unto all riches of the full assurance of understanding.' COL. ii 2. Beneath the passage is a sentimental rhyme, then a prayer, and finally, 3 spots with underscored lines for listing Births, Marriages and Deaths. The last pages give specific prayers for Ash-Wednesday (as spelled with hyphen), Good Friday, Easter Day, Ascension Day and Whitsun-Day (also known as Whitsunday). Whitsunday is the same as Pentecost, the seventh Sunday after Easter. It is a Christian festival celebrating the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles.
This little book has approximately 375 pages (not numbered) and measures 6 1/4" x 4 1/2" by 1" and hard bound with gold leaf cross and lettering. Colorful pansies adorn the right hand side of the front cover and the back is plain, but shows 2 sections. It shows a copyright of 1877, E.P. Dutton and Company and published by E. P. Dutton & Company, 31 WEst 23d Street, New York, 1890. The title page also states "BY THE AUTHOR OF 'SUNSHINE AND STARLIGHT', ETC."
This is a VERY old book, and as such, is in remarkable condition. The binding shows some wear, staining and is a bit dirty (I'll let it's new owner clean it). The first few pages have a few small tears with the rest being perfect and a bit yellowed. There is no writing in the book and would make an exquisite gift.
