"In these days when extravagances are in poor taste. EVERWEAR is the sensible hosiery for the whole family. Handsome enough for 'occasions', yet economical for every day." Quoted from a large advertisement in a magazine with a published date of 1918, it seems they were quite the accessory. Silky and luxurious, they have a lined pattern with seams down the back, as well as reinforced toes and heels, along with 5" substantial top for attachment with garters. In today's world they would be considered 'opaque', being translucent with the pattern very obvious. Lovely!
The color is deep olive green and as the tag suggests, are size 10. From the heel to top edge the measurement is 28" and 5 1/2" across. The lined pattern is on the front part of the stocking and the back is simple stockinette stitch with seam down the back. Content is not stated on the tags, however it is quite possible that they are silk, being soooo slinky and luxurious!
There are a few condition issues, however they are nearly 100 years old! The pictures show some fraying at one of the heels, one small hole at the ankle, left leg, as well as some fading. When gently stretched the fabric is strong with no apparent chance of them tearing. Since they have partial tags attached it can be assumed that they have never been worn.
What a great find!
