Incredible Antique Limoges France Hand Painted Punch Bowl Set circa 1890's. Antique heirloom roses with stems, leaves and thorns are hand painted on a pale green background and surround the bowl inside and out. The base of the bowl is painted with a thick, luxurious layer of gold. The edge of the bowl is also trimmed with generous layer of gold. The bowl 14 7/8" wide and 6 ¼" tall without the base and 8 7/8" tall on the base. The bowl is unmarked. It is in excellent condition. There are no chips, no cracks and no crazing.

The platter is just as fabulous as the bowl. Hand painted with the colors and antique roses as the bowl, the platter has impressed ribbing all around the border. The large and elaborately detailed handles are painted in a rich and generous layer of gold which continues around the entire circumference of the plate. It measures 15 ½" across the side with the handles and 14 ½ " without the handles. The bottom has a white ware mark of V F. Reference for his mark can be found on page 411 of The Collectors Encyclopedia of Limoges Porcelain, Third Edition, by Mary Frank Gaston. She states that is an unidentified Limoges Factory mark from the early 1890's. The platter is also in excellent condition with no chips, no cracks and no crazing.

The elaborate footed base has sponge-like painting technique with a layer of sponged gold over a deep maroon background. The legs of the feet are shaped like acanthus leaves in the shape of fleur de lis. The base of the feet end with pointed talons and all are painted with same, rich thick layer of thickly applied gold.. If the base was marked, it has been painted over. There are several examples in Gaston's book that are similar but none are exactly the same. The base is also in excellent condition, there are no chips, no cracks and no crazing. There is some loss of the gilt trim on the tips of the balls of the legs where the bowl sits and the out edges of the "wings" of the acanthus leaves.

This is a stunning set that will stand out in any setting.
