Stunning, large, Antique Nippon Moriage Tankard. This beauty stands 14 1/8" tall and weighs almost 5 pounds. It has raised moriage and slip decorations around the entire piece. The center shapes of the moriage remind me of sea horses. In between each decoration there is a row of slip beading in the same blue as the background and outlined with a very fine, dainty, white enamel lines. The color is somewhere French Blue or Wedgwood Blue. It has no mark but this moriage pattern is a well recognized Nippon era design. The moriage is in excellent condition. I only found two chips on the very edge of the handle and because of the amount of decoration, it's barely noticeable. Considering the age and the amount of decoration, I find this amazing. There are some very small cracks in the moriage where if bends and this is from the slip or clay drying out during the firing process. The vase is not chipped or cracked or crazed. I just love the contrast between the beautiful blue coloring and the moriage outlined in white. It's an impressive piece that really stands out.
