When Medieval knights returned from the Crusades in the 12th century, they brought back all manner of luxuries from the East, including filigree jewelry for their ladies. These finely detailed filigree and red bamboo coral earrings might have been purchased in some Eastern bazaar for a European knight's lady.
I've crafted these to celebrate my lifelong love and passion for all things Medieval. Perhaps you also have a Medieval heart, my Lady................
These are a modern adaptation of Medieval filigree earrings. The focal points are the lacy silverplated filigree hearts, that are very lightweight. The teardrop briolettes and 4mm. rounds are natural bamboo coral, that has been permanently dyed a bright red shade. Red coral was believed by the Medievals to help regulate women's cycles and promote good health because of its vibrant blood-red color. I use bamboo coral because it is relatively plentiful, looks beautiful when permanently dyed, and does not deplete the world's endangered supply of reef corals. They are all hand wired on sterling silver-filled pins and wire.
The earrings hang from sterling silver leverback wires. They measure 2.75" with the wires, and 2.25" without. These are very lightweight earrings. The red is much more vivid in person, for some reason the camera did not quite pick it up.
The last scan is the immortal Wife Of Bath from Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. If you have never read her story, one of the most memorable characters in all of English literature, you are in for a treat! Dame Alisoun is a middle-aged and very wise lady who has been married several times, including to a much younger handsome man. Her observations on love and marriage are as accurate today as they were in 1390. She proudly wears her scarlet-red dress and stockings.
Express your own Medieval heart in these lightweight earrings, my Lady.
