The Edge of the Gobi Earrings Chinese/Mongolian Turquoise 24K GV Hoops
The edge of the vast Gobi Desert is where this lovely greenish-blue turquoise comes from. Mongolia is currently a leader in the world's production of mineral jet, but recently discovered rich deposits of copper ore and turquoise have poised this Central Asian nation to be a leader in turquoise production for the future.
This region's turquoise has a distinctly greenish-blue hue with a beauty all its own, some of it much more deep green than blue. These new earrings are made from a mix of Mongolian and Western Chinese turquoise.
The earrings feature rope-pattern hoops with 4 loops each, accented with 5.5mm. smooth rounds of Chinese and Mongolian turquoise. The beads show the greenish blue color and earthy brown matrix that the turquoise of this region is famous for. They are worked on 14kt. gold-filled pins with gold plated fluted 4mm. accent beads. they measure a total of 1 & 1/8" long.
My longtime supplier of Chinese turquoise told me that when I first began buying turquoise from him in 2000, it was almost all from Western China. Now there is so much Mongolian turquoise being sold through Chinese jewelry artisans that it is virtually impossible to tell now whether it was sourced in Western China or Mongolia. But the beauty of this lovely, earthy-green turquoise is the same.
All metals are 24kt. sterling vermeil (hoops), 14kt. gold-filled (pins) and gold plate (fluted beads). All turquoise is Chinese and Mongolian turquoise. The last scan is the Turquoise Hill mine in Mongolia, taken by John Poole for National Public Radio.
