These dishes were meant to hold a section of a wheel of cheese. They were available in a range from elaborate wooden boats with wheels so that they could travel the table, to more simple ones of tinware.
This one, of black japanned (painted) tin with gold leaf details would have been used in a more modest household. Most likely English (they appear in the trade catalogs of English manufacturers of the mid-nineteenth century).
Size: Approximately 13" long, 8" wide, 4.5" high.
Condition: Fair. Wear to paint and decoration.
Note that I try to be conservative about condition descriptions, carefully noting any flaws. Of course, with antique items, there will be some signs of usage, and/or manufacturing defects. But overall, my customers have always been pleasantly surprised upon receiving their items, and of course, returns are no problem if I happen to miss anything.
