This Staffordshire transfer ware plate in the "Moral Maxims" pattern was made by Clews circa 1835. The scene has classical landscape in center, border of ribbon with various moral sayings, and three scenes representing knowledge and industry. Backstamp has manufacturer and pattern names. The transfer pattern is printed in black.
This would provide diners with moral education during meals. Now we have television.
Size: Approximately 9.25" diameter.
Condition: Excellent. No chips, cracks or repairs.
Note that I try to be conservative about condition descriptions, carefully noting any flaws. Of course, with antique items, there will be some signs of usage, and/or manufacturing defects. But overall, my customers have always been pleasantly surprised upon receiving their items, and of course, returns are no problem if I happen to miss anything.
