This Staffordshire "flatback" mantel figure is of a man with a basket of grapes leaning against an outsize group of tulips. I don't know if this represents some incident in literature, or is just represents a generic lovelorn swain.
The painting is more carefully done than I usually see on these. The opening in the top tulip could be used for either a single flower or as a candleholder. Or just leave it alone.

No maker's marks. Probably English, ca. 1860

Size: Approximately 10 ¾" high

Condition: Overall crazing, stress line in base (both typical of these figures)

Note that I try to be conservative about condition descriptions, carefully noting any flaws. Of course, with antique items, there will be some signs of usage, and/or manufacturing defects. But overall, my customers have always been pleasantly surprised upon receiving their items, and of course, returns are no problem if I happen to miss anything.
